 "Ok, griller, provided..." 2009-07-10

I've had my Calphalon grill for a while; after using a George Foreman grill this is like a Rolls Royce in comparison! It is well made for the most part, is easy to clean and heats up in about the same time as the George grill.

To those who expect the grill to perform like an outdoor grill, sorry, that's not what this is about. It has been suggested to cover the chicken brests with oil and I can report this does help. Not perfect, but a decent result that uses a lot less energy than the electric oven and is easier to clean.

If you want a closer grilled type food, some of the counter top convection toaster oven/broilers can do it. I have a Delonghi counter top toaster convection oven which does a better job of having the grilling type cooking, but is a royal pain to clean. If you can live with coating your brests with oil before cooking, this will give a reasonable result with a minimum of effort.

It is somewhat expensive given its purpose, but at least, it is well made.

"Cooks as good as it looks" 2009-07-05

We've been using this grill for a couple months now, and are very impressed so far. The plates distribute heat evenly, and are fairly easy to clean due to the excellent non-stick coating. We appreciate that it has has both a timed cook and an always-on setting. The unit takes a couple minutes longer to heat up than our old George Foreman grill, but it's not a big enough difference to downrate from 5 stars.

 "Great design; poorly manufactured" 2009-06-28
By Miss Picante
This grill suddenly died three weeks after I purchased it.

I had very high hopes for this Calphalon grill: it was attractive on my counter, there was plenty of grilling surface, and the enclosed drip pan was a better design than earlier grills I had used. Really a great design.

For the first three weeks or so, it performed admirably.

Then, suddenly, it was dead. No matter where I plugged it in, it was dead. Nada. Zilch. All other appliances still worked from the same outlets, so it wasn't a matter of needing to press a reset button or checking the fuse box.

So I marched it right back to the store and got a refund. Then I pulled out my prematurely retired George Foreman grill. While not as attractive, it has shown up for work faithfully every day for the past three years. It's earned a spot in my kitchen.

I thought about trying a second Calphalon grill, but I've lost confidence. And they're not cheap, either. Keep looking.

"Cooks my chicken breast just fine !!!" 2009-05-17

I read the reviews after I bought the HE600CG. I was wondering what they were talking about. I could read the dials, it looks well made. It looks like it belongs in a restaurant rather than a kitchen. It has a better (than the Cusinart and Foreman) warranty , including 5 yrs on the non-stick coating. It cleaned up great and took no longer to heat up than the Foreman I replaced it with.

Then I realized that some of the reviewers wanted the carmelized meat they get on an outdoor grill. They prefer burnt carbon over fully cooked meat. Sure.. it looks different. It also looked different in my Foreman grill. But no red juices, so it is cooked. Of course, I did the math and figured out to cook it longer than the recommended time. I would start at 12 minutes at 450 degrees if you have a full thick breast.

I liked the timer. It actually shuts the unit off. It is better made than the Cusinart GR4. Side by side, you see the differences. I like being able to adjust the height of the top plate. The Cusinart GR4 has to cups that are easy to slide away or fall and leave a mess on the countertop. There are also drainage issues with the GR4, read the reviews on the GR4.

This is definitely the Rolls Royce of indoor grills. My panel has not fallen off, no dents and the no-stick surface cleaned with the wipe of a wet paper towel. Everything is as advertised.

I guess it is all about expectations. Some people want burnt(carmelized) meat. My chicken breast came out just fine. Pale, yes, but cooked and healthy.(Sorry...no burnt carbon). Moist, not dry,or spongy. I made the right choice for me. What you want, may be different.

BTW I still am trying to figure out what a panini is. LOL

Want to cook a quick meal? This is the perfect way to do it! Sandwiches, steak, chicken, anything you can think up - it can all be done in (normally) less than ten minutes. It also makes for a terrific gift.
